Barnett Bryer (1878 - 1958)

Barnett Bryer, known as Barney, is the husband of Dinah Rachel Morris, born Dinah Dik, is the sister-in-law of Rachel Levin, my 2x great aunt. Morris family HERE. Bryer family HERE

Parents: Barnett (Berel) Bryer (1851 - ?) and Yetta Fink (1854 - 1923)

Tombstone for Barney's mother Yetta who died in London on 29 November 1923 and is buried in the Edmonton cemetery there. Hebrew translation: "Here is hidden/ The modest woman who pursued [acts of] charity/ and kindness all the days of her life/ Mrs. Yuta daughter of Zev,  May his memory be for a blessing/ passed away 21 Kislev/ 5684 age 70 years/ [abbreviation] May her soul be bound in the bond of life."

After Yetta's death, her husband Berel, a carpenter and Hebrew teacher, travelled to Palestine with the intent to settle there. I suppose he died and is buried there but I am unable to locate his grave

Migration to England: Appears to have come to England after 1901 as I cannot find a 1901 census record for him and his family. He and his wife Dinah and their eldest son Michael must have moved to South Africa sometime between 1908 and 1911

Occupation: Carpenter, then furniture dealer. He appears to have been in business with his brother Alec Bryer under the trading name Bryer brothers

Married: Dinah Rachel Morris on 1 January 1903 in Liverpool, England. Barney was 24 and Dinah 23

Their first child was born in 1904 when Barney was 25 and Dinah 24 or 25 years old. Their last child was born in 1919 when Barney was 40 and Dinah 39 or 40 years old

Barney going to South Africa departing Southampton, England on 29 January 1907 bound for Delagoa Bay, servicing Port Elizabeth, aboard the Guelph. His age is given as 28 and his occupation as a miner

Barney returning to England from Durban, South Africa abord the Galician. The ship arrived in Southampton on 30 March 1907 and his occupation is given as a carpenter

1924

Their address in England, 53 Whitechapel Road, London, is that of his uncle Isaac Bryer. Barnett's occupation is given as a furniture dealer and both he and Dinah are age 46

Golden Wedding Anniversary

Golden Wedding Celebrations; Mr. and Mrs. Barney Bryer.

Golden Wedding anniversaries are not a frequent occurrence. It was, therefore, particularly gratifying to see the couple after fifty years of married life so well preserved and young-looking.

The celebrations which took place on January 1st at the Clarendon Hall drew a large gathering. Mr. and Mrs. Bryer were among the earliest Jewish settlers in Bloemfontein and well known amongst the community.

Mr. Bryer is one of the few surviving founder members of the Synagogue and has been identified with practically every Jewish communal stitution in the city. He is still a committee member of the Synagogue, Talmud Torah, Chevrah Kadisha and Gemillus Chasodim Societies.

Relatives and friends had come from many parts of the Union to attend the celebrations. These included their elder sons, Nathan and Maurice Bryer, their wives and families from Johannesburg, and their youngest son, Dr. Leon Bryer, to be present on this occasion.

The toast to the bride and groom was proposed by Mr. J. Lovius.

A presentation on behalf of the shool was made by Mr. H. Bradlow, President of the Hebrew Congregation, and on behalf of the Talmud Torah by its Chairman, Mr. S. C. Ostrofsky. Rev. Werner spoke on behalf of the relatives.

Mr. Barney Bryer very ably responded on behalf of his wife and himself.

Hannah is age 23 and their son Marcus is age 2. Living with them is Jacob's sister, Sarah Levin, age 21 and a school teacher, also Mary Barry, age 23, born in Ireland and a domestic servant

1911
The family is at 142 Islington Street, Liverpool, England. Jacob is 38 and a dealer in drapery. He has a shop operating from the premises, which has eight rooms. Hannah is 33 and the children are Marcus age 12 and Simon Bernard age 5

1921
The family is still at 142 Islington Street, Liverpool, England. Jacob died in 1917 and Marcus has taken over the running of the drapery business operating from the premises. Hannah is 43 and the children are Marcus age 22, Simon Bernard age 15 and Gertrude Esther age 4

Passport for Hannah Levin issued by the British Consul General in Berlin, Germany on 13 June 1904. I can only assume that she had lost her original one and this was a reissue, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to travel to Germany in the first place. She must have been visiting Baum family relatives

16 June 1938 in Liverpool, England at 60 years of age from cardiac failure following a gall bladder operation. Buried in the Rice lane Cemetery, Liverpool, England, plot no C33.19

She was 60 years old and resident at 62 Hartington Road, Sefton Park, Liverpool, England, the widow of Jacob Levin, a wholesale clothier. She died of cardiac failure following a cholecystectomy for chronic cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder). The death was reported on 17 October 1938 by her son S B Levin of 195 Woolton Road, Liverpool, England
