Josef Heinrich Halberstein was the younger son of Chaya (or Rachel) and the commercial clerk Osias (or Oskar, Joshua, or Jehoschua) Halberstein

He was enrolled at the University of World Trade for five semesters between the winter semesters of 1935/36 and 1937/38. He took his final exams in June and October 1937. He was unable to attend the final semester of the diploma program. After the Anschluss of Austria, he had to leave the university without a diploma because of his Jewish ancestry. He left his apartment at Marktgasse 3/3/3 (9th district of Vienna), where he had been registered since 1935, on July 16, 1938, to emigrate to Jerusalem, as stated in the registration documents of the City of Vienna

Whether he came to Palestine during the Nazi era is unknown. It is documented that Halberstein married Estelle Rose Levinson (December 15, 1925 – February 9, 2012) on June 9, 1959, in her hometown of Liverpool, Great Britain. This marriage produced three children. Halberstein later emigrated to the USA with his family. Here, he Americanized his first name to Joseph Henry. He also adopted the Hebrew temple name Zvi. He was granted American citizenship in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 12, 1965; at that time, he was living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He held a civil service position in Dahlgren, Virginia

His parents and his brother Daniel (January 1, 1913 to September 10, 1992) also survived the Second World War. They died and were buried in Israel in 1947, 1958, and 1992, respectively.

Joseph Henry Halberstein died on October 23, 1977, at the age of 59, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was buried there in Oak Hill Cemetery. On the gravestone, next to his name in Latin letters and his dates of birth and death, is the Star of David, his name in Hebrew characters (Joseph Zvi ben Johushua), and the phrase from his relatives: "Clean hands and a pure heart." His widow was buried in the same cemetery in February 2012.

Harold was killed on 3 December 1945 when Harold was a flight engineer on a Liberator KH125 aircraft which was flying from India to RAF Oakington. The aircraft was hit by lightning and lost several pieces on its wing before crashing into the ground near Rochefort killing all on board. He was buried at the Rochefort-Sur-Mer Naval Cemetery in France. He was 36 years old

Gertie's World War II Women's Land Army index card. She enrolled on 14 January 1942 and was demobilised on 2 February 1946. She wanted to support the War effort but refusing to be involved in anything that would include "killing"! So she joined the Land Army and worked on a farm in Wales

Biographical summary

Gertie was born prematurely on 3 March 1917. She was so small she fitted into a shoe box! Less than a month later her father died at the age of 44 from Bowel Cancer. Consequently Gertie was raised by her mother and her eldest brother Marcus (my grandfather) and when Marcus married his wife Zella in 1927 Gertie came and lived with them at their house in York Avenue, Liverpool. My mom shared a bedroom with her and Gertie was more like an older sister than an aunt to her - the age difference was 13 years. Gertie's mom Hannah died in 1938 when Gertie was 21. By then she was working as a warehouse assistant and had moved to 62 Hartington Road, Liverpool. In the 1939 register Gertie is listed as living with her brother Simon Bernard and his wife Peggy in Liverpool. On 14 January 1942 Gertie joined the Land Army, working on a farm in Wales, until her demobilisation on 2 February 1946. She then moved back in with her brother Simon and his family before marrying Harry in 1947 and they moved to 1 Olive Lane Liverpool and lived there until her death in 1979

Her niece Gillian Ranicar-Breese (Nee Levin) describes how "she looked after Marcus and Bertie (her two brothers). She was a house Frau and never got an education. But she was a nice good natured woman. She ... subscribed to The Tatler Magazine and in her living room were photos of the Royals and the aristocrats." My mom remembers her as a lovely sweet natured woman. By all accounts her marriage to Harry was a very happy and fulfilling one
