Berko Rubin (Wrobel) (1912 - 1969)

Berko Rubin, born Berko Wrobel, is the husband of Minnie Gould, the neice of Simon Glynn, who is the husband of Esther Reizel Levin, my 2x great aunt. Glynn family HERELevin family HERE

Parents: Unknown

Born: 11 July 1912 in Poland. He was one of ten children. I have only been able to identify four of them, Louis Rubin and Jack Rubin, who also lived and worked in Liverpool. Percy Rubin a timber merchant in Cheshire, and Max Wrobel, who lived in London. It appears that Berko came to England after 1921 as I cannot locate him in the 1921 census

Married:
Minnie Gould in (January to March) 1935 in Liverpool, Engalnd. Berko was age 22 and Minnie was age 20

Children
Their only child was born in 1937 when Minnie was 23 and Berko 25
  • Robert Stephen Rubin 1937 -
Naturalization
Berko was naturalised on 26 January 1940. He had chnaged his surname from Wrobel to Rubin sometime before he married Minnie in 1935

Wrobel, Berko (known as Berko Rubin); Poland; Company Director; 39, Montclair Drive, Mossley Hill, Liverpool, 18. January, 1940. (The London Gazette, Issue 34807, Page 1389)

Ocupation
In 1932 Berko and Minnie Rubin set up the Liverpool Shoe Company, a small fashion wholesale footwear business. As Midland bank refused a loan of £500,
£100 in capital was raised from family and friends. The Liverpool Shoe Company became quite diversified, manufacturing men’s, ladies’ and children’s fashion footwear in the 1940s to 1960s, followed by pioneering the outsourcing of footwear manufacturing to Asia in the early 1970s. Its “Beatle boots” were a big hit in the 1960s. Berko was a  very respected and well-liked person and an effective leader – albeit one who was not good at delegating. He was also a heavy  smoker. After Berko's death his son Stephen took over the business, restructuring and renaming it the Pentland Group
