Obituary

A STALWART OF Liv­er­pool’s Princes Road Syn­agogue and founder chair of the WIZO lunch­eon group, Mar­lene Dover, who has died in Liv­er­pool aged 87, was a tra­di­tional doc­tor’s wife who devoted her life to her fam­ily, friends, Israel and the Jew­ish and wider com­munity.

The young­est of the four chil­dren of Max and Min­nie Lev­in­son, Mar­lene was born in Liv­er­pool and evac­u­ated dur­ing the war to Llandudno where she was taught partly in Welsh. Later she proved her busi­ness acu­men by work­ing in the fam­ily firm, prid­ing her­self on never spend­ing more than 99p on a Kindle book.

In 1958 she mar­ried Oskar Dworet­zki who had fled his nat­ive Dan­zig in 1937 aged eight, along with his par­ents and brother Mar­tin. Des­pite not speak­ing a word of Eng­lish on his arrival, Oskar excelled at school and qual­i­fied as a doc­tor in 1953, chan­ging his name to Dover.

Mar­lene organ­ised din­ners for young pro­fes­sion­als and became involved with the Ladies Guild. Her father and Oskar both served as Senior War­dens of Princes Road Syn­agogue, where she and Oskar had mar­ried, and where her fam­ily roots stretched back many years. In her many years as founder­cha­ir­man of the WIZO lunch­eon group she con­tin­ued rais­ing funds altern­ately for local or Israel projects. She was also part of a work­ing party to safe­guard kosher pro­vi­sions in Liv­er­pool and was involved with the Chevra Kadisha. A lay magis­trate, for many years, both she and, her hus­band, who was Chair of the Gov­ernors of King David School and Pres­id­ent of the Rep­res­ent­at­ive Coun­cil, were for­mid­able com­munal fig­ures, remark­able for their wis­dom, kind­ness and sup­port. A devoted couple, Mar­lene and Oskar were both involved in attempts to improve the care for bereaved par­ents.

Mar­lene cre­ated a warm, wel­com­ing, and com­fort­able home for Oskar and their chil­dren and was noted as a great cook, caterer, organ­iser and host­ess. Des­pite his later ail­ments Oskar was men­tally alert and in his last year he could vividly recol­lect his life in Dan­zig, reflect­ing a remark­able sense of com­pas­sion and under­stand­ing. He died in July, 2020.

Mar­lene is sur­vived by their chil­dren, Simon, Max­ine and Jonathan, grand­chil­dren Ellen, Michael, Alex, Joshua, Abi­gail, Andrew and Mar­tin and a great-grand­son, Tamir. Another son died before Max­ine was born. Max­ine’s sib­lings Alan, Estelle and Her­schel all predeceased her. (Jewish Chronicle 24 December 2021)

Biography

Lea met Hershel in Liverpool, England. She was living in Jerusalem and had come over to Liverpool gain further experience as a midwife at the Oxford Street Maternity Hospital there. In 1950 she had enrolled at the Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing in Jerusalem. Leah chose Liverpool because she had a paternal aunt there, Zdenka Bean, who had married George Bean (later Sir George Bean) in 1953. Their son, David (now the Right Honourable Lord Justice Bean) was born in 1954. Lea and Herzel were married in Jerusalem, Israel, before returning to Liverpool to live and where their son, David, was born in 1961. They divorced around 1965 and Lea and David returned to Israel. She never remarried.

Mr William Lyons, former CEO of Claude Lyons Ltd, and son of founder Mr Claude Lyons, has sadly passed away.

“It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of William Lyons, having celebrated his 90th birthday two weeks ago. William died in the early hours of 21st September 2023, comforted by his daughters Debbie and Lucy.

William was a respected long-standing colleague and friend of the Allendale Group.  He was instrumental in the smooth transition of the Claude Lyons Brand after its acquisition in 2016. We are grateful for his active involvement in the development of the new website, and for his invaluable technical knowledge and guidance over the years.”

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of William (Bill) Lyons, CEng FIET FInstMC SMIEEE, father of Debbie and Lucy and grandfather of Connie, late Chairman of the Claude Lyons group of companies, Past Master Emeritus of the Scientific Instrument Makers’ Company and Past President of GAMBICA.  Bill passed away on 21st September 2023, aged 90 years, at the Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead.

A well-respected scientist and electrical engineer, and loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
