Jeanne Baum (1879 - 1964)

Born: 24 April 1879 in Manchester, England. In the 1939 register her date of birth is listed as 24 April 1877 but this has to be incorrect as her older sister Hannah was born in 1878

Hebrew name: Kreina daughter of Zelig Asher

Married: Nathan Asher Shochet in December 1908 in Prestwich, Manchester, England. Nathan and Jeanne were both 19 years old

Children
Their first child was born in 1911. Nathan and Jeanne were both 22 years old. Their last child was born in 1914 when Nathan and Jeanne were both 25 years old

1881
The family is at 5 Fernie St., Manchester, England. Jeanne's father Asher is a grocer, age 28 and her mother Minnie is 23. The children, all born in England, are given as Annie age 3 and Jane (Jeanne) age 1. The family shared the dwelling with Minnie's father, Harris Rosenberg, age 51, from Poland, also a grocer, his wife Toby, age 50, born in Poland and their 2 younger Polish born children, Rose, age 15 and Rachael, age 9. In the census records Jeanne's name was recorded as Jane


1891
The family is at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Manchester and Asher is a provision dealer age 36. Minnie is 32, Annie is 13, Jane (Jeanne) is 10, Fanny is 5 and both Abraham and Rachel are 1. They have two servants, Sarah Markus age 19 from Russia and Ellen Brown age 21 from Ireland


1901
The family is still at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Manchester. Asher is still a grocer / baker / shop keeper. He is listed as born around 1856. Both he and Minnie are now naturalised British subjects. Living with them is Jane (Jeanne) age 20, Fanny age 15, Abraham, age 11, Rachel age 11 and Harold age 1


1911
Jeanne has now married Nathan Shochet and the family are living at 20 Nelson Street, Sunderland. Nathan is age 29 and his occupation is listed as financiar (law office) and is working on his own account. Jeanne is age 28. Their daughter Thora, born in Sunderland, is age 3 months and also living with them is Mary Yore, age 20 and a domestic servant


1921
Jeanne and Nathan Shochet and the family are still living at 20 Nelson Street, Sunderland in an 8 roomed house. Nathan is age 41 years and 5 months and his occupation is listed as financial agent and is still working on his own account. Jeanne is age 41 years and 2 months. Their children are Thora age 10 years and 5 months, Gerald age 9 and Harold age 7 years and 3 months



1939 register
Jeanne and Nathan are living at 19 Park Place east in Sunderland. Nathan is listed as a financier and property owner. Their three children are still living with them


Death
17 August 1964 in Sunderland, England at 85 years of age. Buried in the Jewish section of Bishopwearmouth Cemetery (Section 3, row 16, plot 9), Sunderland, England

Deeply mourned and sadly missed by her son, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, relatives and friends. May her dear soul rest in everlasting peace. Hebrew translation: Here is buried a woman of valour praised and beloved, crowned with every upright attribute, Ms. Kreina daughter of the late Asher Zelig, who passed away on 9 Elul (5)724, to the heartfelt regret of her son, her daughter and all the members of her family. May her soul be bound up in the bonds of (eternal) life.

Will for Jeanne Shochet. £25 to the Manchester Talmudical College to remember her parents and her brother Abraham Baum, £200 to her sister Raie, £50 to her nephew Simon Bernard Levin and the rest to her daughter Thora Dinah Shochet

Jeanne Shochet Probate 9 December 1964. The value of her estate was £6,566 and the beneficiary was her daughter Thora
