World War II Military Service

Harry enrolled in October 1939 in the Liverpool Kings Regiment (Service number 3774272) and was sent to India with it's 1st Battalion. He ended up serving with the Chindits in Burma under Wingate. He took part in the 2nd Chindit Operation in 1944 and was wounded by shrapnel in both legs and one arm on 25 May 1944 at the Blackpool Stronghold and after being carried out of the Stronghold was evacuated by light aircraft. For more information on this battle see HERE. I met him in the late 1960s and he was a very taciturn man with half of his third finger missing

Transcript: Fought With The Chindits

One of the men who came home with the Burma leave contingent nearly a fortnight ago, was Pte. Harry Freedman (26), King's Regt. 122, Lance-lane, Wavertree, Liverpool, formerly of 66, Heathfield road, Wavertree. Pte. Freedman, called up in October, 1939, was posted to India. And for five years he has been in that theatre of war fighting in Burma with the Chindits, and being wounded on both legs and one arm last May.

Two days after Pte. Freedman landed in this country his parents received news that he was home. He was taken straight to a military hospital. He is now on 28 days' leave.

Before joining the Army, Pte. Freedman, who is an old boy of Birkenhead Institute, was articled to the firm of William Thomson and Moulton, surveyors and valuers, Liverpool.

Gertie's World War II Women's Land Army index card. She enrolled on 14 January 1942 and was demobilised on 2 February 1946. She wanted to support the War effort but refusing to be involved in anything that would include "killing"! So she joined the Land Army and worked on a farm in Wales

Biographical summary

Gertie was born prematurely on 3 March 1917. She was so small she fitted into a shoe box! Less than a month later her father died at the age of 44 from Bowel Cancer. Consequently Gertie was raised by her mother and her eldest brother Marcus (my grandfather) and when Marcus married his wife Zella in 1927 Gertie came and lived with them at their house in York Avenue, Liverpool. My mom shared a bedroom with her and Gertie was more like an older sister than an aunt to her - the age difference was 13 years. Gertie's mom Hannah died in 1938 when Gertie was 21. By then she was working as a warehouse assistant and had moved to 62 Hartington Road, Liverpool. In the 1939 register Gertie is listed as living with her brother Simon Bernard and his wife Peggy in Liverpool. On 14 January 1942 Gertie joined the Land Army, working on a farm in Wales, until her demobilisation on 2 February 1946. She then moved back in with her brother Simon and his family before marrying Harry in 1947 and they moved to 1 Olive Lane Liverpool and lived there until her death in 1979

Her niece Gillian Ranicar-Breese (Nee Levin) describes how "she looked after Marcus and Bertie (her two brothers). She was a house Frau and never got an education. But she was a nice good natured woman. She ... subscribed to The Tatler Magazine and in her living room were photos of the Royals and the aristocrats." My mom remembers her as a lovely sweet natured woman. By all accounts her marriage to Harry was a very happy and fulfilling one
