Eli Shatz (1904 - 1944)

Eli Shatz is the first husband of Eunice Ruck, the daughter of Fanny Leah Levinson, who was the sister-in-law of Minnie Glynn, my 1st cousin 2x removed. Glynn family HERE

Naturalization
The family were naturalised in March 1906 when Eli was one year old


Myer Shatz an Alien, now residing at 38, Bethesda Street, Merthyr Tydfil in the County of Glamorgan has presented to me, the Right Honourable Herbert John Gladstone one of His Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, a Memorial, praying for a Certificate of Naturalization, and alleging that he is a Subject of Russia having been born at Worne, Kowno and is the son of Eli and Yochina Shatz both Subjects of Russia - of the age of Thirty two years- a Picture Frame maker - is married and has two children under age residing with him viz. Gertie Shatz aged 2 years, Eli Shatz aged I year

Document dated 18 october 1927 granting Eli freedom of the city of London. His profession is given as a pharmacist and optician. ["Freedom of the Company" meant that a person had earned freemen status within the company or guild and could then apply for Freedom of the City.]

Married: Eunice Ruck on 25 October 1933 in Swansea, Wales. Eunice was age 23 and Eli was age 28


Swansea Bride in Synagogue Ceremony
The wedding took place at the Swansea Synagogue on Wednesday of Mr. E. Shatz, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Shatz, of Merthyr, to Miss Eunice Ruck, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Ruck, Walter-road, Swansea. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. J. Weintrobe. assisted by the Rev. H. Fineberg and the Rev. E. Bloom, Merthyr.

The bride was attired in a gown of ivory satin cut on classical lines with coatee and corsage embroidered in beads and diamanté. The skirt extended into a full court train and she wore a Molyneux veil. She was attended by Miss Freda Ruck (her sister) and Miss Grace Shatz (bridegroom's sister), who wore frocks of gold and peach satin with sequin trimmed coatees, with Estelle and Herschel Levinson, Liverpool, as train-bearers, dressed respectively in a Victorian frock of chiffon velvet and a suit of gold satin.

The best man was Mr. Harry Shatz and the groomsmen Mr. Alfred Martin, London, and Dr. David Lowenshon, Llandaff.

The children are Gertie age 18, Eli age 16, Moses (Morris / Moss) age 13, Aaron (Harry) age 11, Grace age 8 and leslie age 10 months.

MR. ELI SHATZ. DEATH IN SWANSEA BUS
Mr. Eli Shatz, pharmaceutical chemist, of Myrtle Grove, Sketty, Swansea, died in a bus this morning.

He was on the way to his business in Alexandra-road, and boarded a bus at Glanmor-road post office. Almost immediately afterwards he collapsed.

FIRST-AID.
Detective-Inspector E. C. Jones, of Swansea Police, who was on the bus, rendered assistance, and a doctor was called when the bus reached the nearest surgery.

It was found, however, that Mr. Shatz had died, and his body was removed from the bus at St. James' Gardens and taken in an ambulance to the mortuary.

Mr. Shatz, who was 40, had previously been in business in Walter-road and Glanmor-road. He went to College-street, where the premises was destroyed by enemy action, and re-opened in Alexandra-road.

SHARPES Eli of Holmeville Myrtle-grove Swansea died 14 October 1944 at Glanmor-road Swansea Administration Carmarthen 27 March to Eunice Sharpes widow and Moses Shatz wholesale merchant. Effects £3,415 18s. 11d. The date of death appears to have been the 17th of October, not the 14th!

Note his surname is given as Sharpes. After his death his wife Eunice took the surname Sharpes

Eli and his family in 1906 are living at 38 Bethesda Street, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. The property appears to no longer exist
