Fanny Baum (1885 - 1950)

Born: 23 June 1885 in Manchester, England

Hebrew name: Faiga daughter of Zelig Asher

Married: Abraham Goorney in (January - March) 1924 in Manchester, England. Abraham was  40 years old and Fanny was 39 years old.

Abraham was previously married to Ada Finestone who died in September 1922. They had two children, Rebecca born 1915 and Howard born 1921. Both children came with Abraham when he married Fanny and were brought up by them.

It appears that Abraham and Fanny's marriage was not a very happy one and at some stage the couple separated. Fanny was left in very straightened circumstances and was financially assisted by her nephews Marcus Levin and Simon Bernard Levin

Occupation: Baker's assistant in the 1911 census, grocer's assistant in the 1921 census and in the 1939 register she is listed as a wholesale and retail grocery shop keeper

1891
The Baum family is at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Manchester. Fanny's parents,  Asher is a provision dealer age 36 and Minnie is 32. The children are Annie who is 13, Jane (Jeanne) is 10, Fanny is 5 and both Abraham and Rachel are 1. They have two servants, Sarah Markus age 19 from Russia and Ellen Brown age 21 from Ireland


1901
The family is still at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Manchester. Asher is still a grocer / baker / shop keeper. He is listed as born around 1856. Both he and Minnie are now naturalised British subjects. Living with them is Jane (Jeanne) age 20, Fanny age 15, Abraham, age 11, Rachel age 11 and Harold age 1


1911
The family is still at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Manchester and Asher is still a grocer, age 56. Minnie is age 54 with her place of birth listed as Valkevish, Russia; Fanny is age 25 and a baker's assistant in the family shop, Rachael age 21 and Abraham age 21 (who has signed the document)


1921
The family is still at 46 Lord Street, Cheetham, Manchester. Minnie is now a widow, age 64 years and 8 months with her place of birth listed as Kovno, Russia, now Kaunas, Lithuania. She is running the grocery business. Fanny is age 36, single and also working in the grocery store as a grocer's assistant as is Rachael (spelt Raie) age 31. Abe A Baum is age 31 and is a woolen cloth merchant. The house has five rooms



1939 register
Fanny and Abraham are living at 19, Moxley Road, Manchester, Lancashire, England. He is a general draper and she is a wholesale and retail grocery shop keeper. Their son Howard is 18 and a clerk in the executive department of the general hospital. Also living with them is Abraham's father, Harris Goorney, age 84 and a retired general draper


Death
6 October 1950 in Manchester, England at 65 years of age. Buried in the Rainsough Jewish cemetery, Manchester, England

Tombstone inscription: In Loving memory of Fanny Goorney who died 6th October 1950 aged 65 years. Deeply mourned by her devoted husband, sisters, relatives and friends. M.H.D.S.R.I.P.

Hebrew translation: Faiga bat reb Asher Zelig died 25th Tishri 5711. Followed by acronym for May her Soul be bound in the bonds of life

Probate
Fanny Goorney Probate 5 February 1951. She lived at 19 Moxley-road Higher Crumpsall, Manchester, England. The value of her estate was £458 8s. 3d. and the beneficiaries were her nephews Marcus Levin and Simon Bernard Levin

In the 1939 register Fanny is listed as living at 9 Moxley Road, Manchester, Lancashire, England. She lived there until her death in 1950
