In his youth Harold was a dance band leader. He became a  travel writer and wrote travel guides and also books on photography. He also worked for the British foreign office. His travel books included "Your Guide to Malta", "Baden Baden" and "Your Guide to Bulgaria". His photograph books included "Available Light Photography"
